Jacksonville School For Autism Building Upgrade

by | Jan 18, 2021 | Electrical Contracting

Jacksonville School for Autism (JSA) is a not-for-profit, private school established in 2005 as a full services k-12 center for students and young adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). They are dedicated to helping students build a foundation for academic and social success through individual learning assessments, a low teacher-to-student ratio and a team for supportive staff members who build relationships with the students and their families. JSA has a variety of classrooms to meet the needs of individual students. These varied programs allow for the successful development of students and ensures a comfortable transition from new learners to advanced learners.

In March of 2020, JSA relocated their school and clinic to a more expansive campus that was originally a Duval County Charter School. The campus embraces the lush landscape and invites the beauty of the surrounding nature into the building. The new location also provides students and staff frequent opportunities for engagement with the outdoors and expansion of the school’s vocational gardening program. Because the building was unoccupied for almost five years before JSA made the transition, there were several upgrades that were required for comfort and safety.

Miller Electric stepped in to help with those upgrades with a variety of different installations and replacements:

  • Complete LED lighting upgrade
  • Lighting controls
  • New security & telecom system
  • WiFi
  • Lighting controls
  • Chiller & air handler replacement
  • Generator replacement
  • Power outlets refresh

This project was an exciting one for Miller Electric because of the amazing relationship we have with JSA and their dedicated leadership team and staff. We are proud to say we have been involved with the school and supported their mission from the very beginning. This move to a new location will allow their team to continue providing leading-edge education with purpose-driven opportunities for children and young adults on the spectrum.

Michelle Dunham and her husband, Mark, are the founding parents of Jacksonville School for Autism. After the diagnosis of their son in February of 2000, they started JSA with another dedicated family. In Michelle’s role as Founder and Executive Director, we worked closely with her throughout this entire process.

“A dream realized for JSA Staff, Students and Families….a permanent school campus! It could have been a daunting task to purchase and renovate a school campus during a national pandemic, but we found with the right contractors, it was the best of experiences.  I wanted to take a moment to highlight what a fantastic experience we have had with Miller Electric. From the Executives who have supported our mission with Jacksonville School for Autism (JSA), to the Project Managers who truly invested in our need to improve our campus and bring it up to code, to the daily on-site key individuals who valued our program, building and staff.

I am truly grateful for Miller Electric’s support of JSA as we transitioned into a permanent school campus.  COVID-19 has presented many challenges for us all and I appreciate the concerted effort to make JSA a priority.”

-Michelle Dunham, Founder & Executive Director, JSA
